From Hobart:

(Approximately 2½ hour drive without stopping.)

Before you leave Hobart, ensure you visit the summit of Mt Wellington. It is a world class view. (If it is cloudy at the summit – don’t go – you won’t see anything.)

The first town out of Hobart is New Norfolk. You will see the road splits and you can come up to us two ways. We suggest you take the alternative route and visit the Salmon Ponds and Trout Museum, just out of New Norfolk and then to Mt Field National Park and Russell Falls. This is one of Tasmania’s 30 minute return iconic walks. If you have time there are other walks in the Park - all worth doing.

A visit to the Styx Tall Tree country is worth it. You will be amongst trees of up to 300 - 400 years old and some of the tallest in the world. After your visit there, just wend your way up to us, enjoying the natural, ever changing scenery.

From November ‘til April there is a ferry cruise on Lake St Clair at 3pm if you find you have travelled well. If the weather is fine, it is a worthwhile trip. Phone 03 6289 1137 to confirm.

Derwent Bridge Chalets & Studios is located on the right hand side of the village, as you come into DB. There is a car park in front of reception. Our check-in is from 3pm.

Should you choose to dine out, we suggest the local hotel for your evening meal. We can arrange a continental breakfast for just $13 per person if requested.

From Strahan

(Approximately 2½ drive without stopping)

There is basically nothing between Strahan to Queenstown – just a windy road.

A visit to the Galley Museum (local history) is recommended, as it is the history of Queenstown jam packed into one building. Quite fascinating.

There are 3 x iconic walks between Queenstown and Derwent Bridge.

  1. Nelson Falls Nature Trail – 30 min return.
  2. Donaghy’s Hill Lookout – 50 min return to a view – don’t go if it is raining, or if there is low cloud or mist. You won’t see anything.
  3. Franklin River Nature Trail.

All sign posted and with car parks.

When entering Derwent Bridge, you will see a hotel on the right-hand side. Just come on down the highway some 700 metres and you will see us on the left-hand side, just after the Caltex Servo sign.

Should you choose to dine out, we suggest the local hotel for your evening meal. We can arrange a continental breakfast for just $13 per person.

If you are catching a boat cruise in the morning, you will not depart Strahan until around 3pm. Because of travelling time, you will only have time for one short walk. We suggest the Nelson Falls Nature Trail – about a 30 min return walk. (Sign posted and with a car park, about 30 mins from Queenstown.)

From the East Coast

(Approximately a 4 hour drive without stopping.)

Enjoy the drive. Try to visit the historical town of Ross – an old garrison town, with its wonderful convict built buildings, historical bridge – one of the finest in Tasmania and stop at the bakery for a mouth watering delight. Leave the flat farming country and climb the Western Tiers onto the start of the highland country, with its dramatic landscape and lakes.

Be careful on the Marlborough Highway between Miena and Bronte Park especially if it has snowed. It is also a well used logging truck road.

Our property is located on the right hand side of the Lyell Highway, just before the Caltex Servo sign.

From Launceston

(Approximately a 2½ hour drive without stopping)

Although there are two ways one can travel, we suggest the more scenic route of Hadspen, Carrick, Westbury, Deloraine, and Mole Creek, back to Deloraine, then Miena and Bronte Park.

Visit www.greatwesterntiers.net.au for all the information regarding the majority of this journey. There really is a lot to see and do.

Detour to Sheffield – the town of murals and then to Deloraine, Mole Creek etc.
